FAQs

What does a writing consultant do? Why should I work with one?

As a writing consultant, I provide individualized coaching on a variety of writing tasks, working with you individually to develop your skills, voice, and identity as a writer. While we will usually be working on a specific piece of writing, we will also discuss broader techniques for developing written (and oral) communication skills; organizing and refining your ideas; and forming healthy and sustainable writing practices.

Writing is a highly personal skill, and every writer develops their own process over time. Working with a writing coach allows you to explore writing techniques, consciously targeting this skill, while learning how new and challenging genres and assignments can help you refine your ideas and communicate them in new ways. You will also discover what works for you as a writer, not merely by stumbling across new strategies, but through a deliberate exploration of who you are as a person and thinker.

Do you offer editing services?

I do not offer separate editing services. While I will work with you to edit your writing, my focus is on teaching the skills needed for you to successfully edit your own work in the future. For this reason, all of the editing services I provide are done through one-on-one consultations, working together in a shared document. While we will discuss editing options and strategies, all editing will be done by you, the author. This not only helps you to develop essential writing and communication skills, but allows you to strengthen your own voice and agency as a writer.

Will you help me edit my AI essay so that it sounds human?

I do not offer this service. My writing coaching focuses on the value of each step of the writing process, from brainstorming to drafting to editing. I believe that writing without the assistance of AI, while difficult, provides numerous personal and intellectual benefits, and it is those benefits that I work to make visible and help grow through my coaching.

I know that this philosophy can be especially tricky for students working in a language other than their first language, and I often work with international and English Language Learners (ELLs). However, during our time together, I prefer to work with your own writing, despite any grammatical or linguistic mistakes. This will help you to develop confidence in your English writing skills, and will allow us to nurture your unique personal and scholarly voice as it develops in English.

Do you offer discounts or sliding scale fees?

While my ability to offer discounts at any given time is dependent on a variety of factors, including my availability and the overall number of clients receiving discounted services, I do strive to be flexible in my pricing. This is especially true for graduate students, or for high school or undergraduate students from low-income backgrounds. If your circumstances are such that you cannot afford full-priced services, please let me know and we will attempt to work something out.

All of my services can be purchased at an hourly rate, with no minimum number of hours. This is to avoid burdening students with large upfront purchases, and to provide maximum flexibility for individual financial circumstances.

Do we meet online? In person?

I primarily meet with clients online, via Zoom, and will send a video conference link when you schedule a consultation. If you are in Buffalo, NY, and would prefer to meet in person, that may also be possible depending on my schedule.

How do you accept payment?

I accept payment via Zelle (preferred), Paypal, or Venmo.
